Treaty of Bayonne

The Treaty of Bayonne between the First French Empire and the Kingdom of Naples established Joachim Murat as the Kingdom's ruler and his family as heirs to the throne. It was signed on 15th July 1808.

H. M. the Emperor of the French, etc., wishing to dispose of in favour of the Prince, his brother-in-law, Joachim-Napoleon, Grand Duke of Berg and Cleves, etc., the Crown of the Two Sicilies, which his august brother Joseph-Napoleon, currently King of Spain, granted to him, by the Treaty of Bayonne, of the 5th of the present month (July), H.M. the Emperor and King, and His Royal and Imperial Highness the Grand Duke, have appointed, to concert the arrangements relating to this provision, as Ministers Plenipotentiary, the following:

On the French side:

  • H.M. the Emperor of the French, etc.,
  • His Excellency Mons. Nompère de Champagny, etc., French Minister of External Relations;

On the Neapolitan side:

  • H.R.I.M the Grand Duke of Berg, etc.,
  • His Excellency Mons. Martins-Mastrilli, Marquis of Gallo, Duke of Marigliano, Councilor of State and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Naples, etc.;

Who, after communicating their full powers, agreed on the following articles:
